In addition to introductory articles for each era of fathers, the first volume of this series covers the apostolic fathers and early apologists, including: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Barnabas, Hermas, Papias, the author of the Epistle to Diognetus, Justin Martyr, the Muratorian Fragment, Melito of Sardis, and Athenagoras.

This volume contains an introductory essay on the progress of Christianity in the third century, and also covers the following figures and their written works: Irenaeus of Lyons, Hippolytus of Rome, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Gregory Thaumaturgus, Tertullian, Cyprian of Carthage, and a number of other Greek and Latin writers.

The third volume includes a chronological table of the fathers presented, as well as an essay on the differences between the Alexandrian and Antiochene schools of thought, and the text of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed and the Symbol of Chalcedon. The fathers and writers covered in this work are: Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius of Alexandria, Arius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Ephraim the Syrian, Marcellus and the Apollinarii, Basil the Great, Gregory Nazianzen, Gregory of Nyssa, Didymus, Epiphanius of Cyprus, Diodorus of Tarsus, John Chrysostom, Synesius, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Theophilus, Cyril of Alexandria, Nestorius, Theodoret, Socrates, Sozomen, Philostorgius, Evagrius, John of Damascus, and other later writers and hymnologists.
