As he was hanging on the cross, Jesus uttered seven statements across the four gospels:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
“Woman, here is your son … Here is your mother.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
“I am thirsty.”
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
“It is finished.”
In this series of devotionals, Ben Witherington III, Darrell L. Bock, Amy Peeler, Craig Keener, Nijay Gupta, Patty Pell, and Cynthia Long Westfall each examine one of Jesus’s sayings from the cross. What did Jesus want to communicate in the final minutes before his death? What can these statements teach us about his death and resurrection? You’ll come away with a better appreciation of Christ’s sacrifice and what his death accomplished.
